Black Friday is an informal term for the Friday following Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is celebrated in the United States and Canada on the fourth Thursday in November, meaning Black Friday always falls the day after Thanksgiving. For many, it marks the start of the year’s Christmas shopping season and has been the busiest shopping day in North America since 2005.
The term originally came from Philadelphia, where it was used to describe the city’s streets the day after Thanksgiving: packed with people and traffic. Later, the retail industry introduced a new interpretation of the name: referring to the point in the year when businesses turn their profit margins from red to black.
Since 2005, Black Friday has become a massive success in the United States, growing busier and busier each year. Stores open earlier and earlier—many now as early as midnight—allowing the first purchases to be made before shoppers even go to bed.
Although Black Friday originated in the U.S., Danish stores have eagerly embraced the concept in recent years. Unlike in the U.S., where it began with physical stores before expanding to online shops, the trend in Denmark started online. In 2013, the first Danish webshops launched Black Friday sales, and physical stores followed suit in subsequent years.
By 2015, Black Friday had firmly established itself as a major retail event in Denmark, breaking records for the largest single-day sales in Danish history (as measured by Dankort transactions).
