This 14” hi-hat from Anatolian’s Canopus series has a clear stick definition, a fairly solid bottom and more volume than you might expect.
The Canopus series is recognised by the raw, unlathed belt placed around 4-5 cm from the edge. The belt is about 2 cm wide and appears on both the top and bottom cymbal, while the rest of the cymbals have a more traditionally lathed finish.
That gives this hi-hat a somewhat classic feel, but with a slightly more rustic and dry edge to the sound.
The top weighs 1040 grams, and the bottom weighs 1212 grams. So there is a bit of weight in the set – not in an extreme way, but enough to give the hi-hat a clear stick attack and a solid foundation.
Played closed, the attack is quite pronounced. There is a good medium body to the sound, but the articulation still stays fairly dry and controlled.
It is crisp, but not in a thin or harsh way. More with a slightly darker and more rustic character – even though the overall pitch is not extremely low.
It also opens up a little at the top when you dig in with the stick, but it does not become loose or washy. It holds together nicely and keeps a clear core in the sound.
The foot chick is also worth mentioning. Even when you simply close it with your foot, it produces a pretty strong sound. That is always a good sign for a hi-hat that will not disappear once there is a band around it.
All in all, a very nice 14” hi-hat for the drummer who wants clear attack, good volume and a slightly more rustic Canopus character – without it becoming too wild or uncontrolled.
